  • Shared Harvest
Over the past 38 years, SHF has grown to distribute food to over 90 charitable organizations in five Southwestern Ohio Counties; Butler, Darke, Miami, Preble and Warren. In 2020, SHF distributed 11 million pounds of food through our membership in these five southwest Ohio Counties. SHF also continues to act as a regional agent for the administration and distribution of USDA TEFAP commodities through four sister foodbanks, serving an additional 26 counties in Ohio.

Project Description

Contemporary Cuisine students organized a school-wide canned food drive to support Shared Harvest, a local food bank. By working closely with Shared Harvest, we planned and executed the project, ultimately donating over 500 lbs. of food before the holidays to help families in need.

Content: The top 3 things I learned from this showcase were:

  • Organizing a school-wide drive requires time, patience, and hard work.
  • Our community relies heavily on Shared Harvest to provide food for local families in need.
  • This project showed students that they have the power to make a meaningful difference in their community.

Culture: This project relates or connects to my family, background, peers, community or my own personal interests in these ways:

For this project, we partnered with Shared Harvest Food Bank in Fairfield, Ohio. Students in the first bell were encouraged to donate canned food, and to boost participation, we turned it into a competition—the class that donated the most items won a cookies-and-milk party provided by Contemporary Cuisine. Leading up to the drive, students promoted the event with announcements and flyers, which helped generate excitement and engagement.

Metacognition: In reflection, one thing that I would have done differently during my journey with this showcase is:

If we were to do this project again, we would focus more on promotion, including providing daily updates on which classes were leading the contest to encourage even more participation.

Social/Emotional: One thing I am most proud of by completing this showcase is:

We are most proud that we were able to help feed families in our community during the holiday season. Knowing that our efforts contributed to collecting 500 lbs. of food for those in need is an incredibly rewarding feeling.
