The goal of this project was to create a safe and enriching environment for our agricultural campus. In terms of safety, I aimed to reduce exposure to the manure pit and prevent runoff from entering pastures and pens. For the aspect of prosperity, I sought to make our agricultural campus more true to its roots by incorporating garden technology. I also wanted to develop a composting system that would reduce waste and provide benefits for both students and animals. Landscape students could use the compost as a fertilizer, we could produce plants for the animals, and environmental students could utilize the compost for educational and experimental purposes.
I wanted to design a unique and innovative project that would help my school and create a positive change. I noticed that while our agricultural-based campus had a strong focus on animals, it lacked emphasis on vegetation and planting. Creating a full garden or greenhouse seemed challenging due to high costs, so I decided to simplify the project by exploring a composting system.
The top three things I learned from this showcase were:
Our Natural Science Center is an agriculture-based campus, but not all students are involved in planting. I want to change that by developing a composting system that can provide the school and students with resources for a garden. This project also connects to my future, as I previously worked on a farm where I discovered my passion for gardening. While I don’t have much experience yet, I hope to have my own garden one day, and this project will help me gain the skills needed to move forward. Have much experience. This project will help move me to the next level.
In reflection, one thing I would have done differently during this journey with this showcase is:
If given the chance to do this project again, I would focus on evaluating the resources I already have and avoid being too ambitious to the point of impossibility. I plan to continue this project, but I will pay closer attention to factors such as cost, placement, and time constraints moving forward.
One thing I am most proud of after completing this showcase is:
I am most proud of myself for taking on this project, as well as proud of my school, the people, and the resources that guided me throughout the process. This project is educational, efficient, and provides a meaningful contribution to the world.
