Project Description

This project focused on raising awareness about mental health disorders, their prevalence, and their impact. Mental illness affects 1 in 5 people, yet societal stigma often prevents open discussions. This topic is deeply personal to us, as we both live with common mental health disorders. Through our research, we aimed to educate others, reduce stigma, and promote understanding.

Content: The top 3 things I learned from this showcase were:

We learned how common certain mental health disorders are, despite the stigma around mental health in society. One in five people suffer from some sort of a mental disorder. Half of all mental illnesses show early signs before a person turns 14 years old, and 3/4 of mental illnesses begin before age 24.

Culture: This project relates or connects to my family, background, peers, community or my own personal interests in these ways:

This is personal for both of us because we both suffer from a mental health disorder. Because we are part of families, that means our families are affected by our medical conditions and it also means they love someone with a mental health disorder – odds are you do too.

Metacognition: In reflection, one thing that I would have done differently during my journey with this showcase is:

  • Mental health disorders are far more common than many realize, despite the stigma that surrounds them.
  • Half of all mental illnesses show early signs before the age of 14, and 75% of mental illnesses begin before age 24.
  • Awareness and education can help create a more supportive and understanding environment for those struggling with mental health challenges.

Social/Emotional: One thing I am most proud of by completing this showcase is:

We are most proud of how this project has given us the knowledge and confidence to support those struggling with mental health challenges. By increasing awareness and encouraging conversations, we hope to contribute to a more empathetic, inclusive, and understanding society.
