Project Description

  • Learn a dance combination in a genre of dance that I’m not comfortable with (Hip-hop)
  • Video myself learning the combination (show some defining moments) and the final product
  • Put all of the clips together in a video that showcases the process of how a dancer learns, perfects, and performs choreography

Showcase Video

Content: The top 3 things I learned from this showcase were:

Confidence: I learned how to be confident while working on something that I’m not familiar with. Hip-hop has never been my strong suit, but in the end I was able to be confident with myself and my dancing while learning something new.

How To Cope With Stress: Since hip-hop isn’t something I excel at, I was stressed about learning a combination in this genre. I realized that learning something new will naturally cause a little stress and anxiety for anyone. In the end, I just tried having fun with it and told myself if it wasn’t perfect, it wasn’t going to be the end of the world.

Video Editing: Ever since I was younger, I loved making fun videos with my sister and cousins. This project allowed me to have that same fun while creating and editing my final video. I had to relearn how to use the editing software, and ended up with a video I was proud of.

Culture: This project relates or connects to my family, background, peers, community or my own personal interests in these ways:

I feel that this topic relates to a lot of people right now, including myself. Due to Covid-19, a lot of classes turned to Zoom for a solution. I learned a combination off of YouTube, which reminded me of when I was taking virtual dance classes over the summer. Unfortunately, for a lot of dancers, Zoom classes are still their reality.

Metacognition: In reflection, one thing that I would have done differently during my journey with this showcase is:

At the end my project, I wish I would’ve picked a longer combination to learn. In the beginning, I wanted to make sure I chose a combination that wasn’t too long or difficult. After learning and perfecting the combination, I was having a lot of fun with it, and wanted to do more.

Social/Emotional: One thing I am most proud of by completing this showcase is:

I am super proud of myself for choosing a topic that made me venture out of my comfort zone. Not only was it good for me as a dancer to explore a different genre of dance, it was good for me as a person to do something that forced me to overcome something I’ve struggled with. I learned a lot about how to overcome negative thoughts and I couldn’t be more proud of myself.
