Project Description

My showcase is about the environmental monitoring project that I did during my time at AZ. The results were put into a 32 page lab report. It has 3 distinct sections that are Environmental Monitoring Cultures and Subcultures, Effectiveness of IPA Wipes and Hand Washing, and Gram Staining and Microbial Identification.

Content: The top 3 things I learned from this showcase were:

The first thing that I learned was AZ procedure for environmental monitoring and how subcultures were obtained. The second thing I learned was how to do a gram stain and identify bacteria based on results. The final thing that I learned was that AZ’s hand sanitizer is more effective than handwashing at disinfecting a surface from bacteria.

Culture: This project relates or connects to my family, background, peers, community or my own personal interests in these ways:

My extended family has a history of working in the medical field on both sides. They are proud to see that I am continuing my family’s interest in the fields of medicine.

Metacognition: In reflection, one thing that I would have done differently during my journey with this showcase is:

One thing that I would have done differently would have been to not give my two weeks at the vet hospital. I feel that I could have adequately worked at AZ and the vet hospital while balancing school and such if I just cut back my hours at the vet hospital. I aired on the side of caution that way my grades would not drop, but I do think that I could have balanced working 2 part time jobs and school.

Social/Emotional: One thing I am most proud of by completing this showcase is:

I am most proud to have the internship at AZ in the first place. There are only 2 students from BT that get the internship, and I was one of them.
