Project Description

This showcase is about the techniques used for vertical ventilation and the benefits for firefighters and victims in the structure.
1) Tools and equipment
2) Techniques
3) Effects on the environment inside the structure
4) Benefits for firefighters and victims

Content: The top 3 things I learned from this showcase were:

  • The importance of operating from a roof ladder and how it provides a stable work surface to ensure the safety of the firefighters operating on the roof.
  • We have a clearer understanding of how to complete the necessary cuts in a safe manner.
  • We gained a better understanding of the benefits of vertical ventilation and how it improves conditions inside a structure that is on fire.

Culture: This project relates or connects to my family, background, peers, community or my own personal interests in these ways:

Both of our fathers are in the fire service. We both have a vested interest in learning the tactics used in the fire service so we can safely perform our duties. Safely performing firefighting tactics ensures that fire fighters can return home to their families at the end of their shifts.

Metacognition: In reflection, one thing that I would have done differently during my journey with this showcase is:

We both wish we would have had more time to prepare for this showcase. We have been very busy with our firefighting certifications and are now beginning our EMT course.

We should have had a more clear mindset and took things more slowly. We both agree that we were our own enemies by allowing the task and this showcase become intimidating.

Social/Emotional: One thing I am most proud of by completing this showcase is:

We both agree we have a better understanding of vertical ventilation and when it should be completed. We also have a better understanding of the various tools and techniques that can be used to effectively complete the task in a timely manner.
