Maxine is a Red-eared Slider turtle at the Natural Science Center.
She has developed shell rot and Kyla Evans is leading the way to help treat this problem and prevent it in the future.
The things I learned through this showcase are what shell rot really is, how to identify illness in turtles, and how to work with a Veterinarian to treat the animal. I also found a love for turtles, which I didn’t think would ever happen.
I feel this project relates to my own interests, because as I stated before I found a love for turtles and learning about them makes me more interested in aquatic life. My family has a love for reptiles and turtles fit right in with what we love.
In reflection, one thing I wish I could have done differently during my journey would be to start earlier. I feel as I rushed through making my project because I decided to do it at the last minute.
One thing I am most proud of by completing this showcase is the chance to educate others! I will continue to share what I have learned from this project with my family, fellow students, and those interested in reptiles.
Students and administrators at Butler Tech can submit their projects to us for inclusion on the website. Please only submit projects with appropriate content and that are clearly documented with instructions and outlines, including photos and other references to help readers.
