Project Description

In this video, I play the STNA that performs the skill of emptying a urinary drainage bag with a mannequin. This is a skill that you are required to know for the Nurse Aide Certification state exam. This skill is used in assisted living facilities and other medical settings when a resident has a catheter in place due to medical reasons. Part of the responsibilities of an STNA is to drain residents’ urinary bags when they are full and record the output.

Content: The top 3 things I learned from this showcase were:

I learned how to introduce myself to a resident, how to properly drain a urinary bag and how to keep equipment, myself and the resident clean and sterile.

Culture: This project relates or connects to my family, background, peers, community or my own personal interests in these ways:

This project will help my current and future peers interested in getting their STNA certification by providing them a skill video to review prior to their certification exam.

My goal is to earn my STNA certification and by videoing myself I was able to evaluate myself performing the skill and catch any mistakes I may see and correct it before my STNA exam.

Metacognition: In reflection, one thing that I would have done differently during my journey with this showcase is:

One thing that I would have done differently during my journey with this showcase is I would have practiced the skill by speaking with appropriate volume for filming a skill versus not being videoed. I also feel I should have reviewed my appearance prior to filming so that I looked more professional.

Social/Emotional: One thing I am most proud of by completing this showcase is:

One thing that I am most proud of is I feel I developed a better understanding of the skill. By allowing me to practice the skill with an audience watching, it helped prepare me for the reality of how the STNA certification test will be.
