Project Description

As part of the PLTW Engineering program at Lakota West Freshman, we built bat houses for first grade students at Clear Creek Elementary, who are studying bat habitats. These houses are designed to replace bat habitats that have been disturbed or destroyed.

Content: The top 3 things I learned from this showcase were:

  • How to use a table saw
  • The importance of precise measurements
  • How to improvise and make adjustments as needed

Culture: This project relates or connects to my family, background, peers, community or my own personal interests in these ways:

This project connects to my family, background, peers, and personal interests in several ways:
Howard, who aspires to be an engineer, was inspired by this project. All the students involved discovered a passion for building things and working with their hands. Additionally, the project highlighted the value of helping others, as the students realized the impact they could make on their community and the environment.

Metacognition: In reflection, one thing that I would have done differently during my journey with this showcase is:

In reflection, one thing I would have done differently during this project is:
I would have measured twice and cut once. We wasted some wood because we didn’t double-check our measurements thoroughly enough before cutting.

Social/Emotional: One thing I am most proud of by completing this showcase is:

One thing I am most proud of after completing this showcase is:
Knowing that we provided bats with a home. By helping to create these bat houses, we are contributing to the environment. Bats are losing their natural habitats due to tree removal, and our project has provided them with a safe place to live.
